Delicious. I ordered some shrimp dish that was amazing. Mai Tai was decent, a little too sweet for me but still good alcohol to mixer ratio. Nice outside patio seating that gives a great view of the downtown area. Spring roll appetizers were delicious and so was the edamame!! Reasonable prices and fast service. Parking is hit or miss. Meters on the street can be tough, and pay your meter! I saw parking enforcement come through twice when I was there.

My wife and I had a nice meal here last night. Server was very attentive. They went a little crazy with too many peanuts on Kung Pao chicken. Portion sizes are large and you likely will be taking some home. Prices are very good. Most expensive entree is only about $13 and most are less. I would definitely go back. Very good price for downtown restaurant.

This place is definitely yummy, but it is a little overpriced. Everything I've ordered from this establishment has never disappointed me, but has never really wowed me either. In terms of Chinese places in the downtown area, this place will be your best bet. Oh, and you can get delivery too which is pretty awesome when you're not feeling like going out and want to eat a feast!

Went there for lunch and clearly 5 star. Service was fast and courteous. Appetizers were well prepared and served quickly. Main course was excellently prepared. Had three entrees which were all excellent. Vegetables were fresh and well cooked. One entree was Salmon and it was moist and tasty. Price as very reasonable and will back next time in GR.

My sister invited me to go here when she got a buy 1 get 1 free coupon in the mail. I had only eaten here one time in the summer and that was from the street cart. I ordered chicken pad thai, spring roll & thai iced tea. The pad thai came out and I could tell it was super hot and I am a baby about heat. I took a bite and the noodles were not fully cooked, kind of hard and it was super hot (to me). When our server came back I told her so she as kind enough to replace it. What she brought back out was soooo good!! Fantastic flavor and seriously huge portions! I had 2 meals out of it and there was still a little bit left. Most definitely will be back again!

Good tasting Asian food. Prices are very moderate and portions are large. Food is quickly prepared.

A solid Asian restaurant. Quite the fusion of food, from Chinese to Japanese to Thai food. Their sushi was pretty good- I got salmon nigiri and a sweet potato tempura roll. The roll was rolled just okay, but the taste was there. I also got a Thai Chicken Massaman Curry dish. Definitely well-portioned, and great flavors, reminded me of when I was in Thailand not too long ago. This restaurant is a good option for a date, or if you are new to Asian food as they have so many different options.

First of all, these bastards don't take reservations. What the hell? Might as well tell me "we don't take your business." Cuz that's all that rendered in my head. I was going there for sushi night Tuesday's with friends, figured I'd show up early to snag a table for my party of 5, because they get REALLY busy around 6-7 ish. BUT NO, the host wouldn't let me hold a table with my service until more of my party showed up (am I the only one who thinks that's redundant? Like the whole reason I'm here alone is because they obviously couldn't get here before me...?) THENNNN she wouldn't let me put my name down for reserving a table for my party of 5 just in case it got really busy like I said before. So I was pretty much forced to sit there in there waiting room, or as we in America would call it, the entry door.. (Way too small of a space). Anyways I digress, but their sushi is pretty good, can't complain there. Honestly would of given this place a better rating if they learned to cater to people who are bringing business to their establishment... They're lucky I didn't just say forget it and go somewhere else!

I am always a skeptical when a restaurant tries to cover such a wide spectrum of Asian cuisine. There is not much similarity between Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine. As someone who is Chinese I am always looking for authentic food vs. Westernized interpretations of Asian food or foods that aren't really Asian at all (eg Chinese chicken salad). We decided to try XO for Restaurant Week but never presented with the menu or choices related to this promotion. We ordered off the menu - sushi and curry. The nigiri was still slightly frozen. We had a few rolls - they were meh. They all came with WAY too much sauce, unnecessary sauce that overpowered the flavor of the fish. Perhaps this was intentional. The curry was the highlight of the meal. Nicely spiced. But overpriced for what you get. Personally, I wouldn't go back. I would rather find a place that specializes in the specific cuisine vs. trying to cover everything. "Do one thing and do it well."

This is one of my favorite places downtown to eat. Prices are reasonable for downtown, sushi is above average. Stick to menu items you know and love, you won't be disappointed. I've tried "something new" a few times there, although I'm sure they were executed properly, just not for me (green curry - not a fan). Mongolian beef is the best ever, wow, smokey and delicious.

    (5)
  • Hea-Mi K.

The Mongolian Beef was super flavorful and had a nice fatty, smoky texture. It went perfectly with steamed white rice. My waiter was so nice and attentive. He made sure I had everything I needed :) Highly recommend for lunch!

Sushi was great, and the service was good as well. The dynamite roll was our favorite!

We chose XO based on its proximity to another downtown location where we had evening performance tickets. There was no wait Friday night and the hostess sat us immediately. Our waitress was incredibly polite and conscientious, inquiring about food allergies as we placed our order. (2 out of 3 members of my immediate family have food allergies, so it makes me very pleased to patronize places that are aware and sensitive to them) We had a little bit of everything: spring rolls, sushi rolls, Thai soup and entrees. The service was prompt and accurate, and we found the prices to be quite reasonable. The food was delicious and attractively presented, particularly the "Pink Lady" roll. Xo's location is pretty wonderful, very close to many of our favorite places to visit downtown. The only thing I thought was lacking was the atmosphere and interior. It appeared rather traditional and somewhat dated for the restaurant's fusion concept and young clientele. 4 solid stars, 1 whole star earned for the excellent service alone.

This place can be very hit and miss. I've dined in and also done delivery and I would defiantly suggest dining in only for food quality. The delivery service is amazing and quick but as I said the food can be off. In the past I've had things missing or the wrong protein but when I've dined on my food was perfect Tonight I ordered delivery and received my order within 25 mins the red curry surprisgnly had my extra vegetables I request which was a huge bonus but the curry was VERY oily which threw the whole meal off. I ordered the heat level at a 4 out of 5 an it was probably only at a 2 which also kinda disappointed me. The summer rolls were good but small the potstickers were delicious and you get a lot which is nice. The egg drop soup was great but it's hard to mess up something as classic as egg drop soup. All in all this place had a lot of potential to be great if only they were consistent. The flavor profile is there and the quality or the products is good but the production could defiantly be improved upon. The service is always consistently good although the girl who took my order tonight could use some additional training on the menu she kept having to go ask someone else for help which could be improved on as well

Since 1982, 1st experiencing Thai cuisine on active duty US Navy traveling to Pattaya Beach, Thailand - every chance I get to enjoy a Thai meal I DO! (Try it . . . You'll like it. Me, myself - I'll never go back to chinese!) Visiting Grand Rapids, MI last night and Allison @ Dwntwn Holiday Inn recommended delivery from XO Asian. Went online to find Thai included on menu, but disappointed - without Jasmine rice! Expected typical standard Chinese-knock-off! WOW was I WRONG! Ordered fried Spring rolls (2) - added extra Peanut sauce - spicy, little bit of heat!! Excellent! House special: tender white-meat chicken & big shrimp combo Panang Curry! Out of this world! Lemon grass, green /red pepper, coconut milk - medium (just right) hot & spicy!! Off the hook! (Even w/ plain white rice!) Only thing Bigger Surprise than outstanding meal? Best Price ever seen! = $13 entree (enough go share!) $4 Spring roll; only $2 for extra side of Peanut sauce!! (+ $2 delivery charge) Such a Bargain!

I have lived in GR for 13 years and always rated XO the best around. However in the last 2 years their food has seriously deteriorated in taste, freshness, preperation and overall quality. I ever so politely mentioned this to management, but nothing has changed. I have given them dozens and dozens of opportunities for redemption. Now I am the fool for continuously ordering poor quality and barely edible food from XO for far too long. I am sorry XO, but your food, service, preparation and quality is terrible and inedible. -Sushi rolls are dry and taste old. -Chinese food is always way too salty and swimming in too much sauce. -Vegetables are wilted, soggy and poor quality. -Their advertised "all white chicken meat" is not true! -Crabragoons are either burnt, have no filling and/or soggy. I can go on, but I hope you get the picture. Save yourself from inedible and poorly prepared food from XO and go elsewhere.

Sushi is soso, Went on a date night during 1/2 off and spent close to 80 dollars. No complaints there, felt nice to just feast. I'd feel disappointed if it was full price. Not great but not bad. I've been on several occasions, it's a default if I don't care to travel far and am just looking for a sitdown sushi place.

The title of this review would be "Best FREAKY FAST Chinese Food I Ever Ate In The ICU" When I looked over the reviews it seemed the only complaints about XO involved service in the restaurant. Well that didn't bother me any since my wife was doing an extended stint in St. Mary's Hospital ICU and after days of eating at the cafeteria there I was dying for something different and hankering for Chinese. I was told by the nurses that XO would deliver to the Emergancy Entrance doors so I was like "Awesome". So I can't comment on the service in the restaurant but I can tell you the food is great and if you are ordering after prime time dinner time (I ordered twice, once at 9pm and then at 8:30pm) their delivery service is fast. I am talking Jimmy Johns FREAKY FAST. The first time I ordered I was so excited about the thought of Chinese coming to my wife's room in the ICU I forgot to stop ordering. I ordered Crab Rangoon, Fried Dumplings (Pot Stickers) and an order of Kung Pao Chicken. They told me 30 minutes which I figured was reasonable, so I set my phone timer for 20 thinking I would then go down to the Emergency doors from the ICU and be there waiting for them. NINE MINUTES LATER I got a call saying they were downstairs. NINE MINUTES. So I quickly went down and got my food and brought my treasure back to the room. I ate the (6) Crab Rangoon ($4). Then I ate 3 of my (8) potstickers ($5). I could not believe they gave me 8 potstickers. I was expecting 6. Don't know if they screwed up or what but I wasn't complaining. Problem was I had not even opened the Kung Pao Chicken yet and I was starting to get full! So I left the rest of the Potstickers for leftovers and had about 1/3 of my Kung Pao chicken. All of the stuff was GREAT. So basically I ate the rest of my Potstickers for breakfast the next day, Kung Pao Chicken for lunch the next day and STILL had some Kung Pao Chicken left over! Two days later I was aching for non-cafeteria food again and went back to the online menu at XO and decided to try something else. This time I had the Crab Rangoon and a order of Basil Thai Fried Rice (has chicken, shrimp and beef in it) ($9) They once again told me 30 minutes...but this time I was ready for them. After 8 minutes I headed down to the Emergency Doors. As I got to the doors I could see the guy with my food on the cell phone and my phone rang. I just walked over to him and he laughed and hung up. They were slower this time. It took them 10 minutes LOL The Basil Thai Fried Rice was very good and had lots of meat. So I ate the Crab Rangoon and about 1/2 the fried rice and had the other half along with the remaining bit of Kung Pao Chicken for lunch the next day. So I can't speak to the service at the restaurant, but I can tell you that the food is very good, portions very big and if you are in the downtown area their delivery is FREAKY FAST. ALMOST as fast as the Jimmy John's commercials :)

The Sushi Tuesday special makes Tuesdays my favorite weekday. Sure they don't take reservations but for half off sushi, no complaints from this girl.

  • Griff G.

Came in for lunch with a co-worker and was thoroughly impressed. The lunch menu offers a wide selection of entrees that come with two sides for under $10 which is not the norm for downtown eating. The atmosphere is nicer than most Chinese restaurants, and the service is exactly the same as any other Chinese place I have ever been. I am looking forward to checking this place out for dinner and drinks.

Negative experience. I ordered online and received chicken satay charred to a leather inedible mess. It was hard to chew. The chicken and vegetable dish I ordered was bland- almost as if NO flavoring sauces were added. It tasted like vegetables - sauteed with chicken and with no additional stuff added. Bland as it gets. The chicken satay cooked to a leathery strip was inexcusable.

Nothing good, and I mean nothing good I can say about this place. Was in Grand Rapids for the birth of my grandson so we stayed at the city flats across the street from XO. We started off with the fried dumplings. They were overcooked and the filling was not good. My wife had the beef pad Thai, and I had the Singapore rice noodles. She ordered her pad Thai medium, I ordered my noodles hot. Hers came out hotter than mine and had no peanuts. The presentation was also lacking and it came with a lemon and not a lime. She sent it back because it was too hot and they brought her another one with peanuts this time. She ate it since we had not ate all day on our trip. My Singapore rice noodles was lacking in madras curry and their interpretation of this dish was also strange. Green peppers in Singapore noodles? Me thinks not. The dish also lack flavor and the presentation was also bad. The food was reasonably priced but not good. I certainly do not understand why people would eat this.

Heard many good things about this place. However, I was terribly disappointed by the sushi. Check Republic around the corner.

Their food is decent for what's available. Prices are fair and their delivery is quick and easy.

I thought I was going to have to be really harsh, but the food redeemed the slow service. There were 3 of us in our party and ordered very different dishes. All three dishes were very good. They only lost points for the slow service , but they were very nice.

The selection is great and the flavors are good. My favorite part is the Lunch Special menu mon-sat 11:00 am - 3:00 pm. Great deals, if you ask me. You get your meal, choice of rice and 2 sides. Varies from 6 to 11 bucks. The service is average. Nothing to say about that.

  • Edmond N.

I came in for a light lunch. Ordered a spicy yellowtail ha drill and spicy tuna roll. Pretty easy rolls to make but very disappointed. There was more tempura batter than fish in any of the rolls. In addition I ordered tako (octopus) and it definitely wasn't fresh. Wouldn't recommend this place.

    (2)
  • Mary D.

Even at half price the sushi was ok. My pad thai was flavorless and cold. Why people stand in line for this place is beyond me. I was unhappy with our experience; however, I would have been really angry if I had waited in line for mediocre food. I do have to say our server was very good, friendly, and attentive.

  • Audreana V.

I've been a few times and always had very poor service. The waiter never came back to the table to refill our cups. We ordered spicy salmon rolls and they had clearly been sitting out . The rice on the outside was hard and the top of the rolls had darkened salmon and they weren't even close to being cold. When we asked to have fresh ones made they refused, saying they where fine and next time they would make us fresh ones. There won't be a next time.

My wife and I have been eating XO for a long time. A few years ago, I would have given them 5 stars, but can't any more. We've tried a number of times to give them another chance, ordered different dishes thinking we would find the flavor we knew and loved from the XO of past. But it's simply been disappointing. The tempura seems increasingly soggier each time, the oil tastes old, chicken is dry and almost as if it's been frozen/freezer burned for a long time. Shrimp over cooked, vegetables soggy and soft, swimming in watery, over sauced dishes. The quality of the food has just gotten worse and worse. Again, we want to love XO. We used to, but I think we've decided not to give them more chances. There's many more food experiences in Grand Rapids that are well worth it.

    (1)
  • Kate H.

I really want to like XO. I want to love it. But I have given then 2nd and 3rd and 4th chances. Their food yum, Its really good. I'm not going to lie. But the service is soooooooooo horrible every time I go there Im so turned off when I leave. If XO would get some real wait staff and not every family member or friend of the family or whatever to serve, Ill go back. The waitstaff is so impatient, forgetful, and this time they even argued my order when I said I am allergic to seafood and I can only get veggie sushi. They are very impersonable as well. Makes me sad such a good place lets their wait staff ruin it for them.

  • Marie S.

XO is a very convenient restaurant to my husband's office downtown, but I think we are finally tired of it. The last two times we've gone there, they have brought out the entire table of food, with the exception of my 4 year old son's chicken fingers and fries (all the "fingers" are, are sweet and sour chicken pieces). This week, the four adults in the party were completely done with our food by the time they brought his out. Also two tables, waited on by the same waiter, came in after we ordered and had their food before my son had his.

Came in on New Year's Day expecting to enjoy the lunch specials, which, of course, were not happening because it was a holiday. oh well.. The service was decent, but could have been better. The food was the quite good. I had the sesame chicken, which was tender and nicely fried, and fried rice, which was less flavorful but still good. The platters are HUGE, you will take half home unless you're an olympic athlete who just left the gym. Food: A Service: C+ Atmoshere: B

  • Phil G.

To quote another review: "XO is very consistent". Consistently bad. The service has been slow/poor every single time and the food has been poor every. single. time. After seeing a few positive reviews, I was hopeful, but coming from a much larger city with excellent Asian restaurants, I can say this is not even decent or average Asian cuisine. It's been consistently stale, overdone or just plain tasteless. The sushi is below average as well. There are so many other choices for Asian/sushi in the GR area that my stomach has convinced me to give XO ... zero more tries.

    (1)
  • Jesse L.

The pad Thai was ok. Sesame chicken was ok. Seaweed salad came out partial frozen. Service was good, especially considering how busy it was for Art Prize weekend. They kept the waters topped off, which was great.

  • Ben B.

This review is only for people interested in cheap sushi, and good people watching. I only go on Tuesday afternoons when the sushi is half off, the dinner rush hasn't started, and I can sit out on the patio with a cold centennial and watch people walk by, cars getting ticketed, and police doing whatever it is police do... Usually I stick with 2-3 rolls and a beer or 2 and I end up walking out for under $20 with a tip. The sushi is not the best I have ever had, and I am sure they get a fresh delievery every wednesday but its quite a value. I would wait to go on wednesday or friday if you want sashimi.

I had the Hunan Shrimp and Scallops. I did not care for it at all. The shrimp was overcooked and the vegetables were of poor quality. Ordering and delivery were fast and friendly.

A barn. Sauces were brown goo. Service was pleasant, distracted, amateurish.

I stopped into this place with a couple friends for lunch during work and was pleasantly surprised. The food was an interesting mix of Asian cuisines, but everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, but the service was a little bit slow. They do have great discount days during the week as well if you ask the staff.

I found a worm in my sushi, I do not lie and have 15 witness. A real live worm, wiggly butt and all. Did I say the worm was alive? I wish I took a picture. After almost vomiting and freaking out, they offered to comp my meal. I fled and never returned.

Best panang curry in town! We do add onions and pea pods. I could drink the broth all day! Half off sushi night is crazy, but worth the wait. Like the 'lady in pink' and LOVE 'hot girl' rolls. We always ask for Peter as our server. He is so friendly! He is the reason for a 5 star! If you are going to order regular old orange chicken... don't bother going!

    (5)
  • holly s.

I love coming to this place for the curries. However, recently a friend and I stumbled upon it on a Tuesday, which was half-priced sushi night. Ok- I've been to a lot of half-priced sushis and sushi happy hours, where the sushi gets happy and half of it leaves the plate- leaving half-priced sushi. BUT, here, it was the exact same rolls. Very good deal! Very delicious!

    (5)
  • amy s.

Yuck. I will never eat from this place again. My Pad Thai was so dry that I'm almost positive it was leftover from another night and reheated. There was no flavor at all and everything was just like rubber. I'm officially done with all Chinese food.

    (1)
  • Jessica K.

Love their sushi. Amazing Roll is truly amazing (as the name suggests) and I have also gotten addicted to their sweet and sour soup. Specialty rolls though I have noticed are miles better than the regular hand rolled. The reason this is not a 5 star, as others have mentioned, is the slow service and often forgetting to bring extras that we have asked for such as hot tea or sugar.

    (4)
  • Kenjamin S.

XO is awesome on tuesdays to dine in if you want decent sushi half off! great deal. but there's a catch. the service is pretty much sub par. otherwise I usually get general tso's which is better than some others around like china city or city wok. at that rate I also get it delivered. overall decent china food experience.

  • Maggi O.

I've given them so many chances to have at least one good dish. Their food is extraordinarily bland and just not good. I don't understand because the workers seem nice, but they allow people to pay for the food they serve. Maybe the cooks are cruel. Or the owners are wicked evil. I don't know... I hesitated to give one star because their delivery is incredibly fast (it usually arrives within 10 minutes even at a busy time). But honestly, if they spent 5 extra seconds to taste the food they put out, and maybe 5 minutes to cook it properly I wouldn't mind getting my order a little later.

    (1)

Good sushi is easy to find. Great sushi is not. However, XO has GREAT sushi. Half off Tuesday special and the service was awesome.

    (4)
  • Marika K.

The food is wonderful, and the delivery is quite fast. Not fast enough that you'd wonder if they're just microwaving leftovers, but it usually takes about twenty minutes. I try to get miso soup at every Asian place I go to, because it is my favorite. This place has the closest to homemade tasting soup that I have found as of late. This easily would have been five stars before I actually went inside and ate there. I cannot remember the last time I witnessed such careless and slow service. I could have given our waiter a little slack if they were busy, but they really weren't. Half of the tables were empty, and I found myself contemplating just leaving before my soup got to me, even though I absolutely love their food. Bottom line, order takeout, and you'll love this place.

Four of us had dinner here recently on a Friday night. The waitress was pretty expressionless, but not exactly rude. The food was good. My husband and I had Pad Thai -- he chicken and I bean curd. The teenagers we were with had chicken and seafood dishes. The portions were really large, but the price wasn't small, so it would have been worth it had we not been on our way to a show and unable to take the leftovers. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, and the service was definitely not stellar.

    (3)
  • Cassandra N.

The service here was great. Our server was very fast and attentive. The sushi was OK, but nothing to write home about. We went on Tuesday for the half price sushi. You get what you pay for. Cheap sushi tastes like cheap sushi. I brought a couple pieces home for my kid to try and she felt that their sushi rice was over-salted. I'm apt to agree. Not great, but not awful.

They got my simple order completely wrong and the food was of horrible quality.. Tasted like garbage. I will never return.

  • Karyn O.

Today was my first bad experience. Usually, the service is pretty good and the food is tasty. Definitely Not the best sushi in GR, but good. However, today was so rough I felt the need to share and hope good comes from it. Service was horrible during lunch, I ordered 3 sushi rolls and got 2, they were out of Spring rolls and a few other items, and the server could have cared less about us. Never even asked how everything was, so I didn't even bother sharing my disappointments. Sushi tasted old and fishy, I couldn't finish either roll it was almost making me sick. I probably won't be back for a while since this visit put such a bad taste in my mouth, literally.

  • Ryan H.

Service can be slow at times but the food and lunch prices are hard to beat. Try to sit in the section with the older Caucasian lady, she is by far the best waitress there and occasionally gives extra crab ragoons/spring rolls. I would recommend this as a lunch destination (large portions for $6) and not a dinner place. The meals are the same but the dinner prices are double. General Tso chicken and the crab ragoons are awesome!

    (5)
  • Dusty V.

Gross. How do you screw up sesame chicken? I gave them two stars because the crab cheese and spring rolls were good.

    (2)
  • Mrs Y.

Very good thai dishes - love massaman curry. Best pad thai around. Good fresh tasting sushi, and you can't beat the tuesday half off deal. As other reviewers have mentioned, the service can be very unpredictable, nevertheless it's always busy and that won't stop me from returning.

Solid Asian food restraint. They do Chinese, Thai and sushi pretty well. The price isn't too bad either. I prefer this place if I'm going to have Asian food

Delivery is Fast! I was told my food would be there in 30 minutes, it was probably only 15 minutes and the nice man was knocking on my door. I stayed at the Courtyard Downtown Grand Rapids and the delivery man came up to the 6th floor and brought my food to me. They added about 4 bucks onto the bill for delivery. Ordered the ol' stand-by Chicken Pad Thai. The portion was HUGE, plenty for 2 people. Since I was only one, I didn't finish it all. The noodles and chicken were good and very hot (as in temperature). Not spicy at all, but I'm sure if you want spicy, they can do it. There were plenty of peanuts and bean sprouts on the top, which I really liked and felt like I could get some in every bite. I've dined in on other occasions and remember it being nice. Nothing bad to say about the place. It's a good place, with decent prices and they always give you plenty of food.

I've gone to XO a few times. On Tuesday, they do half off sushi, which is a good enough deal. The food is pretty consistently average, and the service is never exceptional, however, I recently had an experience that will definitely make me reconsider coming back. I had called to see if they took reservations, and they told me they did not. Ended up going down and putting our name on the list. The hostess ignored us for a few minutes when we walked up to her stand, so we ended up having to call out to get her attention. A little bit awkward. I was told it would be a 30 minute wait--not terrible. Madcap is just down the street, so we went and grabbed coffee. We came back after 25 minutes to check on our table, and were told "it would be another 20 minutes." We walked to another shop on the block, and came back after 17 minutes (I had been timing it). We checked on our table again, and were rudely told "it will still be that 20 minutes I just told you, there are 7 people ahead of you on the list." We asked if we could at least sit at the bar and have a drink, and the hostess told us "no, but if you really need one you could go to another bar and have a drink."It was very impolite--a simple "no" would have sufficed. While this was happening, we saw a few parties walk in--who had made reservations! So, they do take reservations, I was just told they did not. More than 7 parties were seated ahead of us--some of them may have been reservations. We ended up being seated after an hour and 10 minute wait. I am fine with having over an hour wait, but it would have been much nicer if they had been honest about the wait time from the start. We could have used that time to have a cocktail elsewhere. Upon being seated, we were greeted by our waiter, who took our various orders. There was a language barrier between us, and ordering was awkward. He was unable to answer questions we had without multiple prompts, and had difficulty understanding that we wanted certain items brought out before others (as appetizers and a soup/salad course). The sushi was served at a very strange temperature, and the rolls were not constructed well. The ingredients were spread unevenly throughout the various pieces, and the seaweed pieces were not connected. The tempura was not the greatest we've ever had--it was very soft, and there was not a good variety of vegetables. There were lots of onions, with a few mushrooms, broccoli pieces, and a slice of carrot. The warm dishes were generally more enjoyable than the cold. Once we had finished eating, we sat there for about 20 minutes before we had to prompt our waiter to drop off the check. At one point in the evening, we had wanted to order another drink. As he was walking away from the table, I called out for him as he was about 3 steps away. He stopped, looked back and looked me in the eyes, and then walked away. I would not recommend XO for sushi. They do an alright job with warm dishes.

My favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids and the best Asian food you will ever eat. I go here regularly with friends and the service is spectacular as well as the food. If you want great hospitality, then go to XO's.

Dinning at XO's is always a great experience, sometimes the service can be slow but the food is worth it! The lunch time specials are the best, however dinner portions ARE larger than the lunch ones so the price is a bit more. They even have alcoholic drinks and a delicious non alcoholic xo exotic juice. It gets even better, I just found out they deliver to my house!! This place is awesome!

I was wandering the cold empty streets of downtown Grand Rapids- wondering what happened to us- when it started to rain..... I ducked into the only place on the street that was open- a little asian restaurant called XO. It was warm and bright- full of happy smiling couples.. The thought of getting a 'table for one' was too depressing so I took a seat at the bar. The bill was less than all the money you still owe me, you whore. But- I wish the therapist I started seeing after you left me was as helpful as the waitstaff. The shumai isn't bad.....

XO is the only Chinese / Asian that delivers to our NW apartment, and I have never visited the restaurant for anything other than carry-out. However, it being our only option is not the reason we continue to order, week after week. Although it is more expensive than a pizza, and delivery for a couple meals with some crab rangoons can be $30 or more with tip, we LOVE it. It arrives fast, is always hot, and the portions ensure that dinner Friday will at least be lunch on Sunday or some such combination of meals. Plus they use plastic containers that can easily be cleaned and re-used in the kitchen for the green and thrifty folks ( like us ). The General Tso's Chicken is a house specialty. and fantastic. I love the Singapore Rice Noodles ( They have Thai also ). Too the people complainging about the sushi, go acorss the street. XO has our loyality in GR.

Some of the best Asian food in GR. The Chinese, Thai and sushi are all good. I love Tuesday night half off sushi! Some of the rolls are really good and it's always fresh. Expect a wait but it's worth it. There's a full bar that you can order from while you wait to get seated. The lychee martini is a great drink and not something you can find everywhere. Service is always polite and efficient although they can be a little slow if the place is packed. Only complaint is that the atmosphere could be a little better. The tables are pretty packed and sometimes I feel like I'm eating with the table next to me. The booths are the way to go if you can get one.

The good, the bad, and the ugly...here goes: The GOOD: the food is rather delicious and pretty addicting. Some of my favorites are the Beef Chow Fun, Mongolian Beef, and the steamed dumplings. Also, the 1/2 OFF SUSHI ON TUESDAYS is something you really can't beat. The Hot Wheel and other specialty rolls are delicious. That being said... The BAD: service isn't always the best. On Tuesdays when it is packed (due to the 1/2 off sushi special) it can get even worse. If you order Chinese food that day, the wait is bearable. However, if you order sushi, be sure to bring some homework and a board game cause you'll be waiting for what feels like an eternity. Enough time for the cooks to go fishing, scale the fish, cut up the pieces, grow and then cook the rice, prepare the rolls...you get the idea. The UGLY: parking. If you are in the mood, park in the lot by Louis Benton. You will be lucky if you find street parking. Or save yourself the trouble and just have your mom drop you and your date off. Overall, XO is good food, a great deal on Tuesdays. The parking however is rough.

Not the best food. I ordered take out the other day and the meat tasted really funny (ended up just throwing it away). Their panang curry is usually okay though.

The first few times I ate here, it was quite unimpressive. The hot & sour soup was borderline gross. But now, a couple years later, I love to go! With added sushi - not a huge selection, but definitely good enough to cure a fix, it is definitely a great place to stop in for lunch or dinner. The lunch portion sizes are great. Not too much, not too little. And the hot & sour soup is definitely better. A big seller is the Pad Thai. It is definitely better than many other places I've been, but not the best. The General Tso's chicken is very good. That is probably the dish that sticks out the most in my head. The sauce has a great taste and the chicken is battered just right and also has a great flavor. They do have outdoor seating, but the abundance of homeless people lurking around the area makes it difficult to enjoy your meal without being harassed. My only suggestion would be for the servers to be a little more attentive to their tables. For years, server after server, my water has been empty. I am definitely a fan of spicy food. Now, if I'm going to be consuming hot & sour soup, a spicy tuna roll, a jalapeno roll, kung po chicken and what not, I need to have water readily available. Not just realizing I'm chewing on the last cube of ice in my glass. I'm not saying I need a hose run to the table, but I'm sure I would be through 3-4 glasses by the end of our meal. Otherwise, the staff is quite friendly. I've never had bad service.

Stopped in here for the lunch special! 50% off sushi and excellent selection of lunch specials! I had the Philadelphia roll and sesame chicken! Delicious food and excellent courteous service! Restaurant was pretty packed for a Tuesday afternoon around 3pm

A fantastic Thai, Japanese, and Chinese restaurant in Downtown GR. The General Tso's chicken is good but nothing special as this dish is pretty similar anywhere you go. The Chicken/Shrimp Pad Thai is where it's at. This is the dish that keeps me coming back. They have great lunch specials where you can get crab rangoons/egg roll (summer) or soup (winter) with you entree depending on the season for under $10. In the summer they have a cart set up on the street where they have basic Chinese fare ready to go if you're in a hurry. I always want to expand my palate here, but love the pad Thai so much I can't bring myself to do it.

Quick break down in my opinion I went with one of my girlfriends here for a late lunch/ early dinner. We were seated promptly and my friend ordered the Mooshu Shrimp, and I got their Pad Thai. 4 for the chinese food(Although IMO I really like First Wok better for Grand Rapids) 2 for Thai food, because I don't know why but it was so sweet... Sushi, I wouldn't even try it... The service was excellent though! So... nothing to complain about there. Just the food, I'd prefer to go somewhere else.

After a few lunches with the co-workers, I can say that I am mildly impressed. The service is average and fairly inconsistent, but they try their best during the lunch rush seeing that almost every customer has a time frame. The portion sizes are nearly perfect every time, the food is above average and the prices are more then fair. Parking is VERY limited so all I can do is wish you luck. The outside is deceiving seeing that the ambiance tends to fall in the tacky category even though they try hard. From what I have heard, I would suggest XO for lunch but not dinner. There are many other places in downtown Grand Rapids where you don't have to fight for a parking space, a reservation and the waiters attention. But if you're in the mood for Asian cuisine, it's worth a shot.

Two stars, because they do deliver and the sushi lunch special is a good deal. But the delivery service leaves a lot to be desired--we've told people to call before coming in, and they don't. One time they came late, and snatched the money from me. Just a note to you guys, too: when they say it'll be 30-45 minutes for delivery, it's more likely 45.

I ordered the Thai Basil Vegetable which was very good. However, as I neared the end of my meal I found a piece of chicken in it, which made me want to hurl. I don't eat animals so it was particularly disgusting. Apparently they don't cook their vegetable dishes in separate pans or clean them after cooking with meat. This leads me to believe they are not very careful and I will never trust eating their food again. I was out to lunch with 6 co-workers and it took ten minutes from when they brought the first person's dish out to the last. We asked our server about it who simply said, "Our cook is very slow today." If I could I would give them zero stars, but am forced to give them one star. Utterly disgusted.

I was extremely disappointed by this restaurant. It was completely empty when I went, granted it was about 2pm on a weekday, but still. Paper tablecloths were the first thing I noticed. I think they are incredibly tacky. The service was slow, food took forever, and when it arrived it was subpar. I got some sushi and it was basically like eating Meijer sushi. The person I was with got some General Tsos and it was just mediocre. Overall, I was not impressed, will never be going back, and will not recommend this place to others.

I've had dinner and lunch at XO. For dinner I had the Thai Basil fried rice. It was flavorful, but the dish doesn't look flavorful when it comes out. There are no vegetables such as tomatoes, scallion or peppers. It's mainly rice, with egg, some basil and that's it. When it came out, I didn't think I would like it, but I did. At lunch, a friend and I indulged in a lychee martini which was really good. Their lunch specials are priced for the budget conscious. The waitstaff was also attentive both times.

I have to give the extra star for effort, but the food was just too lackluster for me to do more. My mom wanted to try a couple of rolls, and I am sad to report that some of the rice was really hard that we ate. I'm not sure if it had been left out for a while but it kind of ruined it for me. The presentation was beautiful as you can see, but it missed the mark for taste. We had 3 other dishes - one too sweet, one too salty, and one that was just gross. I had to spit that out. I guess the shrimp paste in the Sambal dishes is an acquired taste, and we were just not aware of it. Our waiter was a Chinese speaking guy that chatted with my mom for a bit, and was busy. We didn't get any utensils and napkins for a while, until we asked actually. The prices were okay, but I don't think I'll be coming back.

This place was pretty good! A good place to take a lady friend. We shared an entree because the portions are pretty big. I got the General Tso's chicken it as pretty delicious. The sushi was okay

I went to Grand Rapids with a friend for the weekend. We decided to go to XO for a late lunch. The menu had a wide variety of Chinese, Thai, and Japanese food. My friends both ordered Chinese. The Mongolian beef was pretty tasty! I however, decided that I wanted sushi. My tab was $35 for just me...and I didn't even booze it up! I didn't feel that I got the bang for my buck. I was disappointed. I have had much better sushi for much less dough. The table behind us ordered this whole fried snapper with some sort of spicy sauce on it. I am wishing I would have gotten that, but I never order anything that says "market price" unless someone else is buying! I don't know much about Asian food in Grand Rapids, but think twice if you want to go here for sushi. Stick with the Chinese food menu if you want to keep the tab down!

XO has never let me down. I've only been there for dinner, and many times it's during the half of sushi Tuesday madness. Granted, parking is limited, but the price of the food is worth walking a bit for. My favorite item is the Tom Yum Goong soup. It's very flavorful and quite spicey :) I crave it from time to time. I've also ordered numerous sushi rolls as well as the mango roll which is one of my favorites. Everything has been delicious. Unfortunately I cannot remember the names of the actual thai dishes I have ordered but like I've said, I have never once been disappointed. Definitely a place worth checking out at least once!

On Tuesdays XO has sushi for 1/2 off all day if you eat in the restaurant. It's not anything extraordinary, but from my experience it's always been fresh, there are good portions, and (something that I haven't found with many sushi restaurants in the area) it's consistent no matter who the chefs are. And for the price on Tuesdays it's great, though I don't know that I would pay full price for dinner portions. Of the different entrees that I have tried at XO the only one that has been disappointing is the orange chicken simply because it's mostly big chucks of breading with very little meat. Others, especially the spicy mango shrimp are much better than many of the other Asian restaurants in the area. The one big downside of XO is the service. I don't think I've ever eaten in and felt like the service was decent, even when the restaurant hasn't been busy. Waiting 30 or more minutes for sushi to be made well is one thing, but having to wait that amount of time to have our order taken or get the check when the waiter can clearly see that you're finished is another.

My meal was just fine and was rather well priced. I see some people writing reviews freak when they get meat in their veggie dish. Trust me when I say that reviews like that are worthless and true vegans need to realize that humans are suppose to eat meat.

As a recent addition to the sushi loving population of grand rapids, I was excited to try this place bc everyone has always ranted and raved that I HAVE to try the half off sushi tuesdays. This is the fourth place I've ever eaten sushi, and yesterday will be the last time. The service was horrible and the sushi made me sick. It smells like a combination of dead cats and a wet dog inside. I almost had to go home sick from work the next day because the sushi was so horrible. I'd much rather pay full price and get sushi at the republic.

Combining SE Asian, Chinese & Japanese together. The wonton soup (at $2) is a fantastic and delicious barGUN filled with fat meatballs and crunchy vegies. They don't overcook their meat/vegie dishes, so the vegetables stay nicely al dente. Their Walnut Shrimp has a good flavor but it's overbreaded. The Mongolian Beef has a good flavor but the onion to beef ratio is too high. They also do catering, take out and are open until 11pm Fri/Sat. Cheap drinks, full bar. If you are looking for a good value and have a hankerin' for Asian, this is a good spot to consider.

Ordered the almond chicken for delivery. Delivery was fast but they forgot to bring part of the order. The almond chicken was bland and the vegetables were flavorless and crunchy. It was bad.

You'd be better off to just go across the street to Marado, where the service is prompt, friendly, the food delicious, and the sushi great. XO was a big disappointment. My favorite Thai dish is basil chicken, and I've had it in dozens of restaurants across the US and Southeast Asia. This was the worst. They attempted to make up for the mediocrity by supplying a huge portion drowned in sauce. I will admit the leftovers (which my boyfriend and I split the next day, after I had had 2 portions myself for the original dinner) were pretty good so I'm glad I let it marinate an extra day. My boyfriend had lo mein with beef. Again, attempting to mask poor quality with quantity. He reports that it was okay, but definitely buffet food, not table service quality. And, as our mission is to find the sushi in GR, we just had to try the sushi. We got their first combo. The portions are very generous, and the taste is alright, but not great. The service left a lot to be desired. We thought it might have been because we were the only ones seated outside, but after reading other reviews poor service just seems to be part of the XO experience. Bottom Line: We'll come back for sushi on Tuesdays, when it's half off. Any other day, you'll find us across the street. As for a full meal, definitely not here.

I'd like to start by saying, if this star rating was based solely on the crab rangoons it would be a glorious 10 star rating (thats right, I would hack the Yelp website and make that possible). These rangoons are unmatched and a must every trip to XO. Their pad thai is also quite good (chicken), however, the key here (for me) is to ask for spicy level 3. This is perfect - very spicy, yet still enjoyable. Their green curry is absolutely delish and one of my favorite things to get when its absolutely freezing out (so about 70% of the time in GR). Personally, I wasn't impressed with their other curries - especially stay away from their massaman curry, not a fan. I have had limited experience with their chinese food - the sesame chicken is pretty good. Their martinis are made strong - almost too strong really (and you will find I almost never claim this...so thats strong). Definitely check this place out, great for eating in or else the fastest delivery you can imagine!!

Had the pad thai here and loved it; some of the best I have had in Grand Rapids. Also sampled some of the sushi and thought it was pretty good. Soups were a little bland. Nice quiet atmosphere and very pleasant server.

On our most recent visit I was pleased to see that they now have sushi, but the rolls I tried were just ok. Don't be put off by the white ginger; it's pretty much the same other than the fact that it's not pink. Overall, there is far better sushi at other restaurants throughout Grand Rapids. I guess that can be expected from a restaurant that is trying to do so many different Asian cuisines - it's hard to master them all. The spring rolls are nothing special, but for $2, I'm honestly not so picky. The regular entrees that we had were pretty good, but pretty much just the norm you'd expect. I love that they are open until 11pm on Friday & Saturday, as it's perfect for after a concert or hockey game. It's a little bit of a walk, but it will be significantly less packed than the restaurants & bars right around the arena district.

Jack of all cuisines, master of none. Ok, I get it. You offer Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese all in the same place, but maybe you should just pick one and get good at that. To begin things, I had reservations for 7PM and my party not seated until 7:30. Please tell me then what is the point of the reservation if we cannot get seated approximately at the time requested and that we had the forethought to call ahead for? Secondly, friendly service, but darn was it incredibly slow. Between being seated late and waiting forever for water, drinks and overall food, I am glad my party didn't have an event after dinner. Strike 3,4,5...I was really looking forward to Tom Yum soup. But alas, they were out? Seriously. So I settled for the Sizzling Rice soup which was so bland that after two bites, I abandoned. The table ordered Mongolian Beef, Thai Basil Vegetables and the Sambal delight. The Mongolian Beef was surprisingly the best dish. As for the Thai Basil Vegetables, it had a slight spice to it, but nothing special. I think it would have been better with more actual Thai Basil, lime and other spices. I was really looking forward to the Sambal delight, but was seriously disappointed on flavor and ingredients. The dish itself had no flavor, very bland and was missing the Chinese eggplant when it arrived! I sent it back because that is the best vegetable in the dish. Scallops were small bay scallops which were acceptable. The worst offence was the glob of cornstarch or starch, which I thought was fat originally, that I so nicely had to dispose of at the table. Thanks for that. Clearly after that rap sheet, I will not be returning.

Love Sushi Tuesdays! Never had bad sushi. However one night recommended a friend order pad thai - it did not taste like any pad thai I had ever had - it was not good. Considering others here said the pad thai was good - i am wondering if it was a bad chef night perhaps!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
